Layout:

Posting plan:

  • two 20' barn sides broken into three pieces by poles, that's 6 sections of 6.6' each.
  • one 10' barn end broken into two pieces by poles, that's 2 sections of 5' each.
  • last year we had 5'x3' panes, they were too crowded on the two-piece end
  • this year we have three 2'x3'panes per wall piece. except that we have just two of them for the first and last sections. and we have a 5'x3' pane (modern chart) for the second section. so 17 small panes and 1 big pane.

uh oh, discrepancies between population/height numbers from the wikipedia

page (robert used these to make original chart) and the burning man

official page.

So here's the bman official list, with diffs against the current chart:

  • 2007 height 40+32=72, pop 47,097. (new stuff. wiki page says height unknown and pop 47,366)
  • 2006 height 40+32=72, pop 38,989. diff: you/wiki say height 80
  • 2005 height 40+32=72, pop 35,567
  • 2004 height 40+40=80, pop 35,664
  • 2003 height 32+47=79, pop 30,586
  • 2002 height 80, pop 28,979
  • 2001 height 70, pop 25,659.
  • 2000 height 40, pop 25,400. diff: you/wiki say height 54
  • 1999 height 40, pop 23,000. diff: you/wiki say height 54
  • 1998 height 50, pop 15,000. diff: you/wiki say height 52
  • 1997 height 50, pop 10,000.
  • 1996 height 50, pop 8,000. diff: you/wiki have height 48
  • 1995 height 40, pop 4,000.
  • 1994 height 40, pop 2,000.
  • 1993 height 40, pop 1,000. ok
  • 1992 height 40, pop 600. ok
  • 1991 height 40, pop 250. ok
  • 1990 height 40, pop 800. ok

  • 1987 height 20, pop 80. ok
  • 1986 height 8, pop 20. ok

modern population graph todo:

  • recrop ballet bottom?
  • check mass vs. tits caption (or just kill that pic). A: checked, it's correct (from bman archive, photographer bill boyd, that's his caption)
  • add 07 stats
  • add 07 map

modern graph ideas (don't do this year):

1880s

  • figure out max possible resolution of kindleman flyer.
  • add musical device registration to the 1920s, to match up with 1880s blurb? A: no 1920s this year, and cut the device registration storyline.
    • continued theme over eras: music?
  • make style more uniform with prose of other eras
  • say steam man in background in caption, and/or find better image
  • subtitles: transport, steam art projects (man, bike, horse) - make link to present kinetic steamworks project?, drugs, music
  • need pic of sacred cat ritual. A: not this year, sigh.
  • change kindleman poster date to 1872, don't have two posters
  • distill coke paragraph into one sentence
  • historical parallels to prohibition then drugwar now, and tiein to 1920s during prohibition new era to add

1950s

  • Loki has an unusual piece of rock that would make a fine piece of interactive museum experience - bring it?
    • no, since we nuked the rockworms storyline

random

  • when are we saying "playa" started being used? A: only recently.
  • is it possible that 1843 expedition could have taken dust storm pic? (given history of photography). A: just barely, was totally cuttingedge technology, but we can make the argument with a straight face.
  • add citations? for fremont:

Title: The Exploring Expedition to the Rocky Mountains, Oregon and California

To Which Is Added a Description of the Physical Geography of California,

with Recent Notices of the Gold Region from the Latest and Most Authentic

Sources

Author: Brevet Col. J.C. Fremont 1852

  • consider order of modern, prehistoric, first contact, 1880s, 1920s

2007 content:

printing:

quote from copy shop around the corner, 270 Divisadero, 415 255 9721:

  • color is $8/sqft, roll is 48" wide. standard sizes include 18x24, 24x36, 36x48.
  • color 11x17 is $1.59
  • b/w is $.50/sqft largeformat
  • b/w 24x36 is $2 per page, but digital is $2.50. multipage PDF is fine. emil to citycopyprint@gmail.com or bring in person. 1 day turnaround.
  • lamination is $3/sqft. cutting individual stuff out (like maps) only adds a few cents cost.
  • mounting onto foamcore is $3/sqft.

quote from cybercopy at 16th/valencia:

  • lamination is $6/sqft, color is $10/sqft, bw is $5/sqft. forget about this one

quote from copyworld at 3rd and mariposa

  • 36"x24" is $4 each

so forget about multiple quotes, go with nearby one that's cheaper!

est final museum cost: 173.12 (+ tax?)

  • $19.08 = 1.59*12, colorinsets
  • $52.50 = 3.50*15sqft, outdoor sign

  • $7.50 = .50*15 sqf, big pane
  • $29.02 mounting film (also using some 2007 leftovers)
  • $11.96 portfolio
  • $10.56 cardboard tube for transport

color pictures:

  • 8 big: 1 modern (Harvey) + 6 stoneage (maps, caveman, pheaux, claw, skeleton) + 1 1880s (whistler)
  • 2 small on modern chart
  • all the rest can be B/W, and still be very big

image size questions to resolve:

  • what is native resolution of these images, both bw and color??
    • how far can we stretch before they look blocky? different for posters than for closeup, maybe 300 dpi too conservative?
